Nearly two percent of the American population suffers from the symptoms of fibromyalgia. When chronic generalized musculoskeletal pain is idiopathic, the diagnosis of fibromyalgia is made. It means a specific cause for the pain cannot be determined. Fibromyalgia pain often manifests in both upper and lower body areas at certain muscle-tendon points.

Patients of this condition may report concurrent chronic fatigue, depression, chronic headaches and irritable bowel syndrome. Ketamine Therapy is now increasingly used as an outstanding, salient, and effective treatment for fibromyalgia symptoms. Ketamine Clinics of Los Angeles, led by Dr. Steven Mandel, provides ketamine infusion treatments to patients in Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Orange County, California, and other neighborhoods and suburbs in this part of the southwest.

Treatment with Ketamine Infusion Therapy

The medical community continues to debate whether fibromyalgia is a central or peripheral pain disorder. This means it is still not determined whether this pain is mainly created by the brain or by the nerves that feed into the brain. Due to this conflict, a variety of treatment mechanisms are used to address fibromyalgia in ways that may address nerves both inside and outside of the brain.

Ketamine Infusion Therapy is now used to treat fibromyalgia through its mechanism of NMDA receptor inhibition. It is know that in mammals the thalamus, apart from the cortex, has the highest density of glutamate binding. NMDA is one receptor type that helps in glutamate binding. Thalamus, which is located in the center of the brain, is known to be one of the most important pain centers in the brain.

Furthermore, numerous NMDA receptors on neurons are outside the brain and help to conduct pain stimulus to the brain. Therefore, Ketamine Therapy can help to treat the pain both inside and outside of the brain. Although its function inside the brain is a complex issues, but the mechanism of ketamine outside the brain is a commonly understood model because ketamine is more or less blocking the transmission of pain signals through the spinal cord.

When neurons that sense the pain become agile, as may be the case with many patients of fibromyalgia, they may transmit an excess of pain stimuli through the NMDA receptors. Ketamine Infusion Therapy can block these signals of pain, which not only makes it an effective anesthetic, but also a good analgesic or pain reliever for patients of chronic fibromyalgia pain.

Research Study

To demonstrate the specific benefit of Ketamine Infusion Therapy for patients suffering from fibromyalgia, Noppers et al. conducted a study which found that following ketamine infusion, a majority of patients, compared to an active placebo, rated their pain scores as at least 50 percent reduced.

Previous studies by Sorensen et al. and Graven-Nielson et al. had similar findings that revealed more than 50 percent mitigation in fibromyalgia pain in half or more patients receiving Ketamine Infusion Therapy. While these studies focused on a single dose of ketamine, doctors now use a multiple infusion approach to achieve more sustainable benefits against fibromyalgia.

Dr. Mandel receives patients from Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Orange County, California, and nearby areas for ketamine infusion treatments.
