KCLA - June 2024 Newsletter

Original Comic by KCLA’s William

Dear Patients, Friends, and Colleagues,

Welcome to June! The next cohort of graduates is about to be unleashed from academia, vacation plans are coming together, and many of us are asking ourselves: “How best to enjoy the impending summer time?”

I have always looked forward to summer breaks as an opportunity to engage in more artistic pursuits—detailed drawings, comics, paintings, and animations. Whenever I am inspired, I write it down and wait for my next summer break to make it happen.

This system has worked quite well for me throughout the years, but I produced less content as time passed. My backlog of ideas was building up without any release! I started to feel stuck and frustrated with myself. After all, how many stories do you see about the amazing work people accomplish in addition to their 9-5? I also want to be one of those people, and I found the struggle vexing.

Gradually, over the years, those summer breaks have shortened and become preoccupied with other important activities that come with adulthood: getting caught up with medical appointments, fixing the car, and removing the exotic odors my cat produces from the apartment. Wrestling a fat, angry cat in a bathtub with her love handles in one hand and a bottle of organic pet shampoo in the other is not what most people imagine when they think of a fun summer.

Time is our most precious resource. Like money, it is important to be mindful of how much you spend and where you spend it. While I may not be wealthy with free time, I find tremendous satisfaction and comfort in spending some of it sharing my creative expression with you. The comics I make for the newsletter may not be the large experimental projects I used to work on, but sharing them has made me feel that my time was well spent. There is no better way to feel after a project is completed!

I would like to invite you, dear reader, to share some of your creative expression with us! If you have any art or want to enter an op-ed for a chance to be featured in our next newsletter, please reply to this email.

As always, if there is anything we can do to support you, please let us know.

Warm regards,

William

Project Coordinator
